What distinguishes precious gemstones from semi-precious ones?

All other gemstones are semi-precious except for diamond, ruby, emerald, and sapphire.
This distinction represents both the rarity and quality of the corresponding stones in ancient times. All valuable stones, with the exception of colorless diamonds, are extremely hard (8–10 on the Mohs scale) and translucent with beautiful color in their purest forms.
The color, translucency, and hardness of other stones are used to categorize them. The historic differentiation does not always correspond to contemporary values. For instance, despite garnets being very inexpensive, a green garnet known as Tsavorite might be worth much more than an emerald of average quality.
